WRESTLING/JUDO

Judo is a modern martial art, combat sport and Olympic sport created in Japan in 1882 by Jigoro Kano. Its most prominent feature is its competitive element, where the object is to either throw or takedown one's opponent to the ground, immobilize or otherwise subdue one's opponent with a grappling maneuver, or force an opponent to submit by joint locking or by executing a strangle hold or choke. Strikes and thrusts by hands and feet as well as weapons defences are a part of judo, but only in pre-arranged forms (kata) and are not allowed in judo competition or free practice (randori).

BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU

The art began when Mitsuyo Maeda, a master of Japanese Jiu-Jitsu and a top student of Judo founder Jigoro Kano immigrated to Brazil. Maeda, known as "Conde Koma" (The Count of Combat) taught his system to Carlos Gracie Sr, who passed it on to his younger brothers and sons. The brothers also trained their sons, who now carry on the family tradition today. The Gracie family continued to develop the system throughout the 20th century, often fighting vale tudo (no holds- barred) matches (precursors to modern MMA), during which it gained its focus on ground fighting and refined its techniques.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on ground fighting with the goal of ending a fight by gaining a dominant position from which to apply a submission hold to force an attacker to submit. The system developed from Judo, including some techniques from Japanese Jiu-Jitsu and with a focus on ne-waza (ground technique). BJJ enables a smaller, weaker person using leverage and technique to defend themselves against a bigger, stronger assailant. BJJ can be trained for self defense, sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition. Sparring and live drilling play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on performance, especially in competition.

Mixed Martial Arts

Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full contact combat sport that allows the use of both striking and grappling techniques, both standing and on the ground, including boxing, wrestling, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, muay Thai, kickboxing, taekwondo, karate, judo and other styles.

MUAY THAI

Muay Thai is a combat sport from Thailand that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques.

The word muay derives from the Sanskirt mavya. Muay Thai is referred to as the "Art of Eight Limbs" or the "Science of Eight Limbs" because it makes use of punches, kicks, elbows and knee strikes, thus using eight "points of contact", as opposed to "two points" (fists) in boxing and "four points" (hands and feet) used in other more regulated martial arts sports, such as kickboxing, boxing, and savate.
